I now over kill my built Like over size coolers, motor is built for 1200HP+ I am only pushing 940+ things like that. Just something to think about.

Hardin is telling me the 8 plate is good for 900 hp. That seems high to me. They also said merc used it on the 900sci but I can't confim that. On all the blow up diagrams I see show a large round cooler. I also get conflicting info on the round cooler ratings. 3" x 16" what is the estimates rating and at what flow rate?

What HP is your motor are they blown or N/A. Also if you look I believe there are one cooler on on each side of the coupler housing

I pushing 750/800hp with 5 psi boost procharger. Have not dynoed yet but I would expect to be in that range. I know my 2" coolers are far too small with the added heat of the blower.

Personally I would go with Teague offshore cooler then. Call some Hi-perf builders like Teague or Young performance marine I know both of them have used both coolers very nice guys to talk to.

Wink Keep'in it Cool

You are mentioning the heat of the blower. Is the engine here equipped with an intercooler? If not the intake temperatures will be a bigger problem than the oil temperature differential from cooler size selection.

Also be careful just considering oil cooler diameter as a determiner of cooling capacity as the number of tubes and size and thickness of tubes is really more important in how well an oil cooler exchanges heat than the outside diameter of the cooler. On our build 800HP supercharged 496 engines and we like a 3"diameter x 18" long cooler with thermostat control on the oil cooler circut. Never had an issue with this setup and the oil temps stay between 190-210 degrees pretty consistently in warm temperatures and hard engine use. I will recheck and see the quantity and size of tubes in this unit.

Its also kind of important to consider oil capacity as most 800HP marine engines should be a minumum of 10 quart oil systems to 14 quart size. An undersized oil capacity will cause the oil and engine to heat soak and any oil cooler will be a problem getting oil temperatures down and in a consistent range. Good synthetic oils also help lower oil temperatures.

Best Regards,

I skipped a few key points. Yes the motors have inner-coolers. I have 10qt pans and decided on a 3"dia 18" tube bundle with a thermostat controlled oil system. When I mentioned extra heat, I meant from added HP due to the blowers.

I still say over kill it with an offshore cooler body is 22.5" long with a 3.5" diameter body. Why be on the edge!
