Thanks everyone,
I plan on replacing the block for the reasons stated,
I did check the block #s and it is a one piece seal.
I have a nice set of low hour Vortecs off of a 6.2 Merc, from an OSO member.
While the engine is out I am going to re-do the bilge, some interior work etc. So I have time to gather parts, just need to decide which parts.
Sometimes we go away for a few days on the boat and it's loaded down pretty good, but that's just a matter of changing the prop to keep too much strain on the alpha. I just want to make sure I do this right the first time.
Thanks,
Keep suggestions coming.

one suggestion. take the running engine, grease the bores and pack it away in the back of the garage. you never need a spare until you throw it away...

The old block the cylinders are rusted up, I may keep it though. I have 2, 2pc rear main blocks, one is 4blt. and flywheel, coupler with belhousing, but I want to keep the 1 pc.
And just for clarity, the machine shop said even with a 5.7 rod the 383 would have some side wear on the pistons, but not like a 6" rod. So I'm still pondering.

The 5.7 rod in the 383 is about the same rod angle as a 454.

Just wondering why would you not use a 400 small block? And this question is to anyone that would like to answer. I know the vortec heads flow good but crack easy and will lower your compression. Just wondering the thought process here.....Thanks

getting the bore to 4.125 took some doing. no water between cyl sleeves. that is why the steam holes hadda be drilled. as far as piston side wear, we don't have to worry about wear. marine engines don't wear, they break. or they get water in them and then break. 100,000 miles in a car if you are always going 60 mph, is 1,666 hours. i had a 30 ft IMP Eleganza with 1000 hours on orig 454's. and that was really rare.

Average speed for a car is closer to 30 mph from what I have seen on my cars. A 350 will easily last 180,000 with regular oil changes and that would be 6000 hours.

Yes I am aware of the bore.....but cooling in a boat motor isn't a problem and I don't know anyone that ever reused the 400 heads......just wondering why not go this way.......thanks
