An engine should be broken in under load, some hard pulls to mid range RPM's, then vary speed from low to upper mid range hold back on full throttle for a couple of hours then only a short bursts.

What engine types. Flat tappet? Hyd roller? New stuff is just run flat out. The days of break in are long gone. We used to break in motors for a few hours to set rings and wear in things, but today's technology allows you to just go. For old timers it's hard to get out of habits and doesn't hurt anything.
