Default Power steering pump alignment

How close should the power steering pulley alignment be with the front of my crank pulley. I have the v-belt setup. I'm using a bracket off of a gen IV block that is now on my new gen VI block. When I put a straight edge across the front edge of the crank pulley it is like 1 inch away (in front) from the power steering pulley pump. It looks like it lines up between the middle groove and outer groove of the crank pulley. The power steering pump has a tab on the bottom to connect to the bracket. The bracket I have has a round boss that extends a few inches out that attaches to this. I'm not sure of the pump part # for the pump or bracket. It came with the boat and old motor with a spun bearing. When I look at the merc parts look up on line the pumps all look like they don't need that round boss that extends out from the bracket. So I'm assuming my pump is a little different then the ones shown in the diagrams. I'm just wondering if this bracket will work or if I missing some spacers?
