Question Starter woes

So is it actually possible to spend an entire week in the water without breaking something? lol

Last night after a quick run out we swung back to the local ramp to meet some friends for some beers at Gullies (floating bar here in newburg ny)...

And low and behold when I went to refire the engines to move into a slip at the bar, the started just 'spun' but it did so in a menacing mannor, did not crank the engine, but was loaded up..

No amount of cooldown time nor the usual FBWWH (fixing by whacking with hammer) would get her going...

There *is* a difference between a marine and automotive starter no? Im trying to figgure out if I have to yank it and head to the local auto electicalshop for a rebuild, or if I can go to AutoZone and drop $30 for a lifetime waranteed rebuild...

get eth new style marine starter. They are much smaller and easier to install. Wheni pulle my started last year i was contored around my engine with my arm between the oil pan and eth stringer turnign a ratchet 1 click at a time. It was so far teh biggest pain in teh ass job i've done ona myboat. Took 3 hours to pull 2 bolts. With the new smaller starter it went on in 15 minutes becaue it smaller and i could get a wrench under it.

as for the difference. I think its like a marine alternator in that it doesn;t produce any spark at all. Why chance it?

The marine starters are made so that when your bilge fills with gas fumes and you try to crank the engine, your boat won't go BOOM! Only you can decide if that $50 is worth it.

If you rebuild your stock (assuming older style large) starter grind the inboard bolt down to the next smaller metric size by laying the flats across a grinder. This way you can get a socket in there. There is a redesigned bolt that has a smaller head for this reason.
