Default Shift cable adjustment.

I just changed my shift cable. I have seen on here that you need a Merc adjustment tool. I took note of the position of the adjustment nut at the braket on the motor, so I put it back that way. I planned to turn the motor over with ignition off, so the motor's turning over, and see if it shifts F/R fine. Is this not an acceptible way to do it??? Do you really need the tool? I mean they sell a bellows retaining ring tool too, but all you need is a block of wood and a hammer!
