Chris Craft 390 X Twin TRS Out drive Question
Short Story: Starboard TRS out drive was eating gears.
1. Removed starboard out drive.
2. Complete dis-assembly.
3. Total blue print rebuild of out drive, not just replacement of parts but, machining of case and cryogenic treatment of all transmission gears.
4. Re-installation of transmission.
5. Rebuilt transmission hits like a 20 pound sledgehammer.
Problem: Above 35 knots with both trim tabs up the boat will list very hard to the starboard side, correct and then list to starboard again. It will do this repeatedly in rapid succession forcing speed to be reduced below 35 knots.
Air in hydraulics?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers

The tabs are not retracting on their own.
When I retract the tabs from the helm controls above 35 knots the boat lists to the starboard side, corrects and then list again to the starboard side.
If I retract the tabs from the helm below 35 knots the boat doesn't list.
If I keep both tabs fully down the boat will not list.
The boat didn't have this behavior prior to the removal and rebuilding of the starboard out drive.
The drives are L & R handed.
Thanks

Have you looked at what the trim cylinders are doing on both drives? A video camera comes in handy here.

1. The RPM is in sync on both motors.
2. Gear ratio is the same on both out drives. I rebuilt the original. So the out drives are a matched set.
3. The out drives are connected via a tie bar.
4. I haven't examined the trim cylinders but, now that you mention it the starboard out drive lags behind the port out drive when being trimmed in by one or two seconds.
In other words when I trim the out drives all the way up and out of the water the port side comes home first and it takes one or two more seconds for the starboard side to reach the same home position.
Any thoughts on what would cause this?
Thanks for all the help guys.
