assuming you are talking about USCC documentation, not registration, boat must be 26' and larger and have means to stay overnight on, you can get all the info from the USCC documantation center in falling waters WVA, lenthy paperwork but not a big deal, must have a vessel name and hailing port, min 4" on transome, and hailing port must be block style...also you must place a permanate NO. on the hull min 3" somewhere as well, this # will be on documentation papers...hope this helps

Just pay Illinois and be done with it. If you are at the raft up with 7 other boats - all of which have IL registration on the side of the hull, and you don't - guess who's going to get the most attention from water patrol / conservation police / etc? In our area, they will definitely come talk to you without registration numbers - I've seen it happen.
