The small V shaped notch? That's the speedo pickup hole

They have external speedo pickups too. Your drive may be clogged already. But they are mostly not very accurate unless gps.

They can get clogged with sticks. You'd be surprised how much wood could get shoved inside that hole. I just use a small drill bit and drill out the wood by hand, working it like a screw. Take just a few minutes, no big deal. Should be able to blow thru it if it's open. Both my Fountain (bravo drives and Livorsi gauges) and my Baja (Alpha 1 Gen 2 drives w/Faria gauges) both use the drives for the speedo. The Fountain is always within 2 mph of GPS, Baja as much as 4, so not too bad IMO.

Yes, external pickups are available also. Don't know if or why they would be any more accurate. Just more holes in your transom if you ask me. Non GPS Speedos are nothing more than water pressure gauges.

In your pic, yours appears to be plugged with something. Should be a hole in the V

This is what was on my Baja. External pick up hanging off the back of the transom, the pick up on/in my bravo was/is plugged with something and tubing is disconnected. The previous owner just added the external. Mine is like the one below only black in color
