If BUP is correct, could it be water coming over the hatch while slowing quick. Might want to go around the rear harness with a spray bottle while engine is on a hose. Could be doing it when it gets wet.Stuff like this is tough, you just have to keep trying different things.

And like I said the early 496 did not have a shift switch but without the engine serial # a true marine tech would have no idea what you have or how your motor is set up exactly from Mercruiser . Its that simple.
I will say it for the 100th time up here, all STOCK OEM Marine engines go off of serial #'s as to what parts and set up U have. When you bring your boat into a REAL marine shop they can care less what the year is stamped on the hull.
Engine Serial #, drive serial #, Transom assembly serial # and any trans serial # are all important when working on anyone or all of these components to a real marine tech.
Check for tach readings when ur boat acts up. Crank Pos sensor is very possible especially if no tach reading and or a no start with no tach reading.

Well it keeps from throwing out parts and possible fixes that is not applicable to your application meaning in laymans terms the correct parts & fixes of how this motor was set up of your 496 from Mercruiser.
Here is the deal a stock 496 from Mercruiser lets just say a 2001 year model motor is not even close being the same as a 2010 year model 496. Totally different set up from fuel system to emission to ignition coils to exhaust manifolds and risers to PCMs along with mapping of these computers and so and so on. The same holds true with Volvo Penta's or any OEM Stock marine engine it all goes by serial # breaks for part changes, updates and service procedures.

I changed all the spark plugs, fuel filter, and inline fuel filter. Seemed to run stronger on the hose, not a real I know, but well see if it helps a little.

Actually I think you may be on to something. I usually slow in a way as to not let the water rush up the back. However, when it died on me this weekend (again) I noticed there was water around the plastic battery housing, and the carpet was wet. I got towed back in, by the time I hit the beach it fired back up. I went straight to the dock, and seemed to be missing/ coughing when I was throttling down or switching from drive to neutral. But it did not die again.
