Carbed 502/502HP fueling issues on 1996 Baja 272 Islander

Agreed. And it's already in the dumpster.
I've sent the carb off to a tuner along with the distributer for some custom tuning to this engine package and I have a new set of headers to replace the manifolds with, so this should feel like a whole new boat. Now this winter feels even longer, lol.
This helps explain why the motor had tons of torque but would crap out at about 4800 no matter what prop I had on it, and maybe the egregious prop slip as well as it didn't have the power to get the hull out of the water.

In the opinion of the OSO brain trust is it better to switch out the manifold? This is the one I have now. It will accept the square bore carb. The adaptor plate was used as a spacer to clear some funky carb rigging.
Is it worth the trouble to switch it out to an air gap like this one as well?

The RPM (as long as it's not receiving exhaust crossover heat) is really just as good as the Airgap.
As I mentioned, all you need (if you still need 1" height added to the intake you have) is a 1" squarebore spacer. Most will seal to that intake.
Forget what I said earlier about the spreadbore gasket, it has different bolt holes.

If you don't get a spacer you'll need this to seal the carb to the intake:

This will seal your carb and provide good way to attach your Morse throttle cable:

Holley and Edelbrock make one too.

So after chasing down the fueling issues without much improvement I changed out the stock Corsa mufflers for some straight through tips and picked up 500 rpm and it's a completely different beast from half throttle up. The thing was quick out of the hole but a dog up top, and now the upper throttle is where it's most responsive now. It's finally a happy boat.

Update to post:
Through various re-rigging etc over the winter finding a multitude of issues adding up, such as, the stock Corsa tips were pretty much blocked off, the power supply wire to the coil was 22g when a 12g minimum is required, and a slight kink in the rubber fuel line between the fuel pump and regulator all made a big difference and it feels like a completely different boat. With a 1:65 Bravo 1 and a 23p Rev4 it'll hit 5400rpm pretty quickly. It jumps out of the hole and planes quickly, and the midrange acceleration will knock people over, lol. This was with four adults, 40g of gas, and a few beers in the coolers.
I didn't get a mph reading but I'd guess mid fifties with this setup.
