Default HP500 oil thermostat bypass valve?

When running a Mercury Racing HP500 oil thermostat housing, what do you guys use in the housing regarding the oil bypass valve shown here in the illustration, reference part #2? Curious if it's a 11lb or 30lb? Thanks Chris

So you plug the engine block filter pad passage and this thermostat housing one vs running a 30lb bypass in each? What do you use to plug the passages if going that route? Guess a lot of that hinges on if the end user runs an oil filter with or without a bypass valve.

Appreciate the responses!

that,s not exactly what i said,i use a adapter that bolts to the block[mark 4 block],it has no provision for a bypass and i plug the one inside the hp500 style t stat &filter block.the purpous of the bypass is if the filter gets plugged up you will still have oil flow.if your filter is plugged the engine is already hurt and flowing oil full of trash is not going to help it.

I should have been more specific. I was referring to the GEN VI BBC using one of these as they have the oil bypass valves as well. I realize most remove the center and either plug or replace the outer with a 30lb valve. Just curious what happens when you throw a HP 500 thermostat housing into the mix? Run one 30lb in the engine block and one 30lb valve in the HP 500 oil thermostat housing?

Plug all of them with a 13/16" expansion plug and run a filter with a bypass. That's the best way to insure that all of the oil will get cooled and filtered.

Hey Chris
Just for the benefit of everyone, I'm going to post your PM and my answer so that it may help someone else in the future. I hope you don't mind.

Your PM to me
Eddie,

Thanks for answering my question! I found some doorman 13/16 plugs, however I want to make sure they aren't too deep, especially for the block application. About how deep is Max allowable on these? Summit lists one that's 0.330" tall? Sound ok? Thanks again, Chris

My Answer:

I am using plugs from Pioneer. I had trouble finding a plug that was short enough. I just gave up and got what I could and turned them down in the lathe. It only takes about 30 seconds to turn them down, so it isn't a big deal. I don't have the exact measurement right now, but I would be more than happy to get it when I get back in the shop. Off the top of my head, I would say that I cut them down to about .200 or so. I also have some pics of them on my computer at the shop. I would be glad to cut a few plugs and send them to you if you send my your address. I've done it before for a few guys and I certainly don't mind doing it again. Just let me know how many you need and where to send them. The other option is to tap the hole with a 1/2" NPT tap. You don't even have to drill the hole since it is really close to where it needs to be. Tapping the thermostat housing wouldn't be bad since it's aluminum but the block is a pain since it's cast iron. You also need to tap it all the way to the bottom of the hole so the plug doesn't stick up. That's why we started plugging them. It's much easier.
Eddie

If your going to do this what filter do you recommend? And i would think the filter would need a bypass valve in it of around 30psi just like the merc valve is that goes in the block?

Its almost like whats the point in plugging it if you are running a bypass in the filter anyway?
