240/240 .559/.559 lift, flat tappet cam.
They were basically stump puller 5000RPM engines. Most guys who had them, and left stock, would go 300,400, even 500 hours before going thru them. The valvetrain was very mild, and simply just easy on parts. While they were called 800sc's, they actually made around 700HP at the prop. Question is, with what drive was that measured? Merc never offered it with a bravo, most were wet sump 6's I believe, or SSM IIIA or V. They were alot more reliable than the 900sc merc from a longevity standpoint.

The last roots 572's i saw promos on ran 2 piece headers and stamped 8 qt pans..seems like for the money alot of guys took the bulldogs and ran prochargers or whipples ,12qt pans (and the best starters money could buy)
And were pretty satisfied. Easier on the crank snout too
