Sorry for just getting back...company Christmas party yesterday and just got back home. Needed a good brunch feast (with the requisite Bloody Mary or two) to get "right" again.
I appreciate everyone's comments and help. I'm going to go out right now to see if changing the filter helped with the pressure issue. If it did not, I'm going to look at replacing the oil cooler adapter and lines to see if that helps.
I've known about the gasket between the block and the cooler adapter. I did not use one, but I could make one if needed; not hard. My adapter is the big unit used on MK-IV engines. Maybe it needs it? I don't remember seeing a gasket before, but that may have slipped by me when taking it to be hot tanked.
I seriously doubt the issue is with the bearings. I'll go and check clearance notes when I get out to the garage, and I'll report back,
Again, thanks for all the help!

the merc oil system is junk, super restrictive, need to upgrade everything from block adapter, cooler, lines#10 filter mount and use a good filter like wix or napa gold...ran into this before

he never said for sure he used same pump or not, I guess I just assume new pump anytime a engine is apart, that's what I do...
I never said his clearances were the same as before either, I just said the numbers he posted they were are tight for marine use...

I don't think the low oil pressure is bearings either if those are the clearances, now if you have standard pumps and approachin .003 clearances that's going to be an issue and needs addressed...
Did you drill front galley plugs for timing chain? one or both? if so how big?
Also did you ever verify what pump you have? same as before or new one? what is part number on it?

Reused the factory pump. It was cleaned, clearances checked, and verified perfect. Like said, there was nothing wrong with the engine when it was refreshed. The bearings were perfect, and the engine had great oil pressure. I don' think I ever saw it dip below 50 PSI when we were running it before we took it out to have the transom rebuilt.

lol
when I had oiling issues people told me changing the whole system was a MUST, I agree its not great but back then on my 420's the existing lines and fittings were fine 20 years before so I left it, once I put HV pumps in my issues went away...
that's just aimed at the guys saying he MUST change it... there is a different issue we all know that, just a matter of what... I bet clearances are actually bigger then posted.
