Also about 50 % or more a 4 banger boat app in the engine compartment - hatch set up or dog house enclosed - a V-8 engine change out just might not have enough room because of the rear bench seat mounted position or dog house encloser. Sometimes even enough floor cut out and possible gas tank mount position installed too far back. The gas tank position could even be in the way for a larger engine installed.

Keep in mind 17 & 18 ft boats with I/O's with 4 bangers installed will allow as much cockpit space as possible that can be had - so alot times engine area is small especially front of the engine area. Just saying,
