Default Mercury hour logging

When did Mercury ECMs start hour recording by RPM range? Where it tells you hours at 1000-1999, 2000-2999, etc. I'm assuming its when smart craft was introduced, but don't know for sure...

Mercury 2001 with the 496's and 555 computer. (MEFI 5)

I believe it was with the MEFI 3s around 1997ish.
