Volvo Penta Hard Finding Neutral

Volvo Penta Hard Finding Neutral
I just purchased a Cobalt 293 to make the wife happy. Twin 350 with DP outdrives. I am having a hard time finding neutral. Forward to neutral slides by and your in reverse. Reverse to neutral slides by in your in forward. I'm trying to back into slip slowly and it's very hard and almost impossible like this. It has 4 individual sticks. I unhooked the linkage and shifted freely at shifter and no stops forward to reverse smooth. I took cover off back and outdrive shifts freely but I thought it would be like a Bravo with a Detent Ball and spring so when you hit neutral it stays there. I am thinking of changing shifters to 2 sticks that click when you hit neutral. Most of the Cobalt's came with this setup so I am missing something.
The pic is just like mine, just not as clean. The boat only has 250hrs and otherwise runs perfect. Anyone have any Idea's??

the uppers are the same from the SX to the DP up to 2007 when the newer style drives came out. Can I get your model numbers and serial numbers of your engines and drives. There is SB's thru out with shifting issues. Also can I get pics of your control box - its either a Morse or a Teleflex ? Teleflex makes them for Volvo as well.
I am super busy so I might not get back asap with this.

On the inside of that cover in the pic, the one with the shift linkage butterfly on it, there are detents. It works a little different than the Merc setup, in that the butterfly cam actually moves in and out and rides on a detent pin inside, that drops into a "v" shaped slot detent for neutral.
Are you having trouble getting it out of gear at all?

No seems to shift fine. Just hard/impossible to back in slowly. Put it in reverse and pull out real fast it goes in forward and have to get lined up again to try and get it into slip.😂😂
