Amsoil is for sure some real good stuff, ran it for many years.

To answer the above question, Merc Racings best, and latest is the new Extreme Performance 85-90 Gear Lube. Per a Merc Racing bulletin it is the recommended lube for all perf drives from the Bravo XR to the M8. I bought it for my new drives, if for no other reason than to run what Merc calls for during the warranty period. If they take a dump it's going to be with their lube.

It was mostly a joke. Depending on what you are looking for, I think the thicker stuff makes drives last longer. For some reason, I think the new Merc Racing oil isnt as good as the old performance blend.

I ran the Amsoil and did have pretty good luck, I have no clue how good the newest Merc Racing lube is, but like I said if they take a dump it's not going to be a blame game. Had this lube conversation over the weekend with a Merc drive "Guy" and his comment was to change it often, never let it get old. Gear lube is the most batted around topic on this site, who the fock knows.

I would agree the thicker might be more protection,
but mine was just a tick faster with the lighter. :-)

No doubt, I actually started using the 140 believe it or not. Yes, it was 1 MPH slower but drive rebuild intervals got way shorter. There are some guys that race with 10-40 and pick up even more speed.... but we both know it just isnt worth it.

Have not used it yet, I had large supply of the High Performance Merc stuff. Will need toreplace supply this sspring. So I'm listening if this new stuff is better or not.

Mercury Racing Gear Lube 85W-90 1-Quart #8M0078015
  • SAE 85W-90
  • For use in Mercury Racing gear cases
  • Do NOT mix with any other gear lubricants
  • For use with gear lube pump 802891K2
  • 32 fl oz plastic bottle
Mercury Racing Gear Lube was designed for outboard and sterndrive racing applications. This gear lube provides maximum protection against: • Water intrusion – advanced emulsifiers protect gears if water enters the gear housing • Wear – tackifiers and pressure additives improve oil film adhesion and protect against excessive wear • Horsepower loss - prevents horsepower loss and won’t break down when gears reach high temperatures

Recommended for use in Mercury Racing outboard gear cases including: Sport Master, Torque Master, Fleet Master, VI SSM and IV SSM and Mercury Racing sterndrive applications including Dry Sump Six,NXT6, SSM, NXT, Bravo XR, Bravo XR Sport Master drives and NXT transmission assemblies.

A 90 wt gear oil will have the same viscosity characteristics as a 40 wt motor oil at 210 F. A 40 wt motor oil vs a 140 gear lube, the 40 wt will be thinner.

Just talking viscosity here, nothing else.
