Heavy Boat
I HAVE A VERY HEAVY REAR ON MY CARY 50 (QUAD BBC) ANYONE EVER TRIED ADDING TO THE CAVATATION PLATES ON THE OUT DRIVE (LIKE A WHALE TAIL) TO HELP LIFT ? WE HAVE SMALL SKI BOATS DOING THIS TO HELP GET ON PLANE, AND I WELD QUITE A FEW OF THEM BACK TOGETHER BECAUSE OF POOR DESIGN. I'VE SEEN ALUMINUM ADD ON'S ON B-MAX AND OTHER HI-PERFORMANCE DRIVES BUT NEVER ON ANYTHING AS LARGE AS MY BOAT WITH TRS DRIVES. WOULD THESE HELP KEEP THIS THING ON PLANE ? THE BOAT WEIGHTS 32000 LBS AND HAS A TOP SPEED OF 54 MPH, CRUISE SPEED @ 4200 RPM IS 40 MPH.

NO I'M NOT THAT GUY, I,VE NEVER BEEN ON THAT SIDE OF LAKE MICH. WITH THIS BOAT. WE ARE ON THE WEST SIDE OF MICH. OUT OF HOLLAND/GRAND HAVEN AREA. I'M RUNNING 3 BLADE MIRAGE 19 P PROPS. 2 LFT & 2 RT. THE ENGINES ARE JUST REBUILT THIS YEAR AND DYNO'D AT 462- 485 HP (APROX) 5200 w/460 FT LBS AT 4500. I HAVE LOOK AT 4 BLADE PROPS BUT CAN'NT FIND ANY ONE THAT HAS USED THEM ON A BOAT LIKE THIS TO SEE IF THAT IS WORTH EXPENSE...? I'M NOT LOOKING FOR MORE TOP SPEED AS MUCH AS BETTER CRUISE SPEED AT LOWER RPM..

That's a very nice boat. I saw one up at Killarney in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Do you have trim tabs and do they help you get on plane? For what you want, the four blades should work, but you would need the pitch to be lower than your Mirage props. I don't know that they make Bravo four blades in that low pitch, but maybe the Mercury Rev 4. Your boat needs a lot of blade area, what RPM do you hold at when coming on plane, and do you find the props slip?

YES IT HAS LARGE TRIM TABS, GETTING ON PLANE NOT A PROBLEM, AS I JUST PUSH THE CENTER 2 TROTTLES TO 1/2-3/4 THEN THE OUTER 2 UP ALL THE WAY THEN AGAIN THE CENTER 2 AND AWAY WE GO. THE PROBLEM IS BELOW 34 MPH THE BOW RIDES SO HIGH THAT YOU CAN'NT SEE PAST IT. (I THINK I'VE RUN OVER A FEW JET SKI'S..LOL.) IF I PUT THE TABS DOWN TO LOWER THE BOW I HAVE TO THROTTLE BACK UP TO MAKE UP FOR THE DRAG. SO ITS BETTER TO JUST THROTTLE IT TO 4000 RPM + AND GO. I WAS HOPEING SOME OF THE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE MAY HAVE PLAYED WITH DIFFERANT SIZE CAV. TABS ON LARGER OS. BOATS LIKE CIG'S WITH TRIPLES ETC. I OWN A FAB SHOP AND I REPAIR ALOT OF LOWER UNITS ( ALUMINUM WELDING & FABRICATING) SO I KNOW THAT WHALE TAILS WILL BREAK THE CAV. PLATES BUT I"VE SEEN ADD ON ALUM. PLATES ON SOME B-MAX AND OTHER HI-PERF. DRIVES AND IT GOT ME THINKING!!! (I SHOULDN'T DO THAT!)

The Tyler family runs their Cary 50 "Eagle One" out of Great Lakes Marina in Muskegon. You might think about contacting them. Or you can contact Marty Hansen at Great Lakes Marina. He's very well-versed on this Cary.

If you have a fab shop then you're set!
Most of the breakage comes from extensions that are bolted to the TOP of the existing cav plate. If you make a 1-piece extension, about 10" wide, extending back an additional 10" that has a cutout in the center that allows it to be bolted to the BOTTOM of the existing cav plate, then it should work. Use 3/8" thick aluminum.
