Help with oil reading of 496HO

Can anyone help explain why the oil level on the dip stick for the 496HO is about 3/8" different between one side of the stick and the other? This has me concerned about obtaining an accurate reading.

Thanks,
Rick

That's odd...I only have marks on one side.

The stamped marking(shows 'add' and 'ok' levels) on the stick is only on one side. What I was referring to is the actual oil residue that is on the stick when you remove it for viewing the oil level. The residue left on the stick is different on one side vs the other side. It is almost like something is wiping some of the oil off of the back side of the stick.

Oh...I see now. It's probably because the stick is entering the pan on an angle. With surface tension, it probably isn't wetting the upper side of the stick as far as the lower side. Try shaking is a little while it's in the pan then pull it out. Sometimes twisting it a little helps. Mine is always even.

Yes,
Every BBC I have owned has two levels on the stick. One side says F and the other is between A and F. I just keep it at F on the backside and half way on the side that is marked. Shove it in the other way and it is reversed.
