I remember reading posts on this forum last winter where people had gotten couplers that the alignment tools would not enter. Do a search on the subject, you are not going crazy on this! My own opinion is you did no damage to the coupler knocking the high spots off with the tubing. As long as you then got it aligned properly, it will last for ever.

Both of my couplers splines were deformed from major misalignment. The splines were also very pointed and sharp. While knocking off the points in order to get the alignment tool to enter may seem ok, the splines became pointed because material has been " relocated" The extra material that "moved" to the spline ends came from somewhere. There is an alignment issue that caused the splines to get in that condition, now the clock is just ticking.

My bad, I thought we were talking about a new coupler that the tool would not slide into. Sorry. I have a pile of couplers in my shop with the points showing that I replaced. It is just a matter of time before failure when they are like that. What caused this wear is now the question. Chances are, the wear was caused by a lack of lub, not mis-alignment, although alignment may have contributed. Misalignment wipes out a coupler fairly quickly. Food for thought going forward.
