heads 269cc or 290cc
Its time to freshen my standard performance 454. Its a mark IV 330 hp all cast. I'll do the block to .030 with KB hyperutectic pistons and good rings. I'll reuse my rods and have those shot peened. Need to know what oval port head will work best for the bucks. Worlds cast iron 269's or edelbrocks aluminum 290's. Not looking for much more HP but easier to sell a 60+ MPH boat than a 58 MPH boat. Also I understand that comp cams are having trouble. Who makes the equal to the 11-234-3 grind comp cams has.
Thanks guys!

it might be hard to find an exact match on the cam, Crane has one thats close, its lift485int-502ex, Dur. at 50 is 210int-218ex, its on a 114degree lobe center, that would be better for a boat less overlap, ad. duration is 266int-274ex, part # is powermaxH266-2, if you go the Alum. heads make sure you get the Marine version from Edelbrock, its Performer RPM454-0marine

Thanks H2X, I have already priced the heads from Jegs and they are the marine version. $1418.00 pair I believe. The only problem is they sell with valves but no springs. Any ideas? Can I get 400 to 420 HP from this with new merlin intake and performance carb and using the cam you refered too?
Thanks

with that 330, you don't have the best crank. It is not a forged crank like the Magnum's have.
I would go with the smaller cc head. since you have such small displacement you may benefit from going with the Merlin Oval port head, or the small Merlin Rectangular Port heads.

another good thing about the edelbrock heads is they have inconel ex valves and HD stainless intake valves, they weigh less than the cast iron heads, add some aftermarket alum. high perf. exhaust manifolds and you can save almost 150 lbs[with alum heads and manifolds] that is a speed increase there with just the weight savings, and with the added horse power increase I think you would be happy, Dennis moore did a article on aftermaket heads in a magazine a while back I will try to find it, but I do remember they liked the edelbrock alum. heads. dont worry about the cast crank with the rpm range of the cams you are looking at you will be safe, I would have the rods resized and add some high strength rod bolts though, with the heads , cam , intake and carb you should be around 430to435 HP,

Plus the 110 cc combustion chamber on the edelbrock will give you a better compression ratio. I use the edelbrock torker 2 cam on 454's and they work great with better heads. Start and idle near stock with no reversion. Time it +4.

formula31 do you know if the Torker 2 comes as a kit with cam and lifters. Also I know the edelbrock heads do not come with valve springs. Any suggestions or part nos. for valve springs would be appreciated.
Thanks for all your input guys!

yea, it is a kit, around $160 I think. They recommend their own springs with that cam but ive used that cam with 125lb 350 lb duals succesfully, They have to be broken in right.
