Question Wich Igniton System to Use

I am piecing the parts together to convert my 7.4MPI to a Carberated engine.

I have been told that the Delco distributor will work without the brain, but I believe that I should have a rev. limiter.

A complete MSD setup seems like too much money ($800+)

I can buy a new DUI system with a rev. limiter for under $500.

Can I just buy a Thunderbolt V module and plug it into my Delco distributer?

What to do???

No, unfortunately the Delco and Thunderbolt have nothing in common. You are stuck going with aftermarket stuff. I really like the DUI system!

Thanks Guys!

I'll likely go with DUI.

BUDAH,
I thought the 6al is for cars and not for marine use.

The only thing that i do not like about the MSD system is the distributor, as it is constantly dirty inside with corosion and rust from the trigger system. Has this problem been corrected on the new systems? If not my next system would be the DUI.

I am on my third season with the DUI HEI setup and I love it. I changed my springs to open up the advance quicker and I get on plane as quick as a ski boat.

The DUI is the way to go unless you have a blower, otherwise the DUI is the best and by far the most reliable. My friend had to remove his DUI setup because he installed a B&M blower and the HEI on top of the DUI distributor was in the way, so he had to go to the MSD setup.

I like Mallory Marine YLM Series Magnetic triger distributors. I've run one in a salt water boat (Donzi X-18) for years that stays outside on a trailer and it not corroded at all.

Also, there is a guy on eBay selling them "refurbished", but they look to be brand new for $111, and he ships fast. I've recently bought three from him so far and have been quite pleased. I don't think you can go wrong with Mallory especially at these prices.

Purchased 2 6al MSD boxes in June for a twin engine setup. 1 of the 2 has already failed. Went into rev limit mode for no apparant reason. Both are unhooked now awaiting replacement of one that failed. I did gain 100-200 rpm with the hotter spark and blaster 2 coils (relative to original t-bolt iv ignition). Not sure if I will reinstall them. I spend enough time limping home on one engine for mechanical reasons to add insult to injury by now having ignition failures.

Just my experience.....
