it, I'm lookin at 6 grand per engine. Might as well
have 2 brand new engines pushing 500 H-P,
and keep my old ones for spares.

They run great & don't use any oil ( 1 qt per 15-20 hrs,
Excellent for a 502) But I'm wondering if they will
need to be refreshed before juicing them up.

Epeek, I don't know how many hours you have on your engines or how hard you punish them, but the BBC will live a long time with the proper PM. Exhaust, however, is another question. The mercruiser cast iron manifolds are, without a doubt, the biggest POS in the whole engine package. They have a nasty habit of leaking internally at the manifold/riser joint. The problem is by the time you see it leaking externally, it's probably been leaking internally for some time. It will flat wreak havoc on your heads with water sitting in the exhaust ports. Could even lead to a total hydraulic lock on the engine if enough water begins to find it's way in. If I were going to begin with anything, it would be manifolds/headers whether you change engines or not. If you go with the longer winded cams you're going to need a better exhaust system anyway to cut down or eliminate reversion
