Ragtop,
I see the tank, never noticed the trees got taller. Good eye, still looking at the tank out the back door as we speak. They have had it as long as we have lived here, 16 years.

Does anyone know which hull is better for bigger seas? Also, in the same situation here , except between a 79 and 87 30' scarab, they look similar but I've heard the older hulls are better to start with?

Holy 5.5 year old thread! Seriously, check the dates! 2003 into 2004. Most online forums don't like it when you dig up old threads from the grave.
Memory gets a bit foggy, but this "new" Scarab (got the one I posted an ebay link for back in 2004), it's either a 77 or 79 I forget, runs like a charm 5 years later, and is much better in every way than my "old" scarab which was a mid 80's something. It's smoother in moderate seas, faster, and easier to control. Blows my 26' Chris out of the water! Can't comment on the hull quality, or if the differences between boats are with the hull or not ("new" Scarab has over 100HP more than my "old" one, K-planes, and hydraulic steering), but I can say I'm very happy with the "new" 1970's boat, and with how it's currently set up, prefer it to my "older" 1980's one in every situation. YMMV.
Never got a chance to do any of the long-distance trips I wanted to due to family + the economy, but I've had many great shorter trips.
Ended up getting it delivered from NY to FL with the trailer for under $20k back in 04. And yes it's dry exhaust and loud as hell. Neighbors love my 8AM Saturday trips!

Any old Scarab or Fountain will need extensive bottom work to go 100 MPH. In the posted picture, our Scarab at the time ran 83-85 MPH....maybe less can't remember. As you can see, not exactly in control and the inner strakes were way short. Even if you had Merc 6's and Sterling 1200's, you couldn't control the boat much past 85 MPH with the factory bottom. IMO, both boats in stock form are equally average and run 65-70 MPH well in 1-2' water and our Scarab had a factory hook in the bottom.
I make you a deal, I will sell you my 100+ MPH Scarab for 10% of what I have spent on it since 1987
