Which Mirage Plus hub?

I recently bought my boat from Wette Vette's dad. It currently runs a Spinelli prop on an Alpha SS drive. The SBC produces around 500HP, 650HP on nitrous. I'm looking to get another prop, most likely a 25p Mirage Plus. Which hub do I need for this application?

I would run with the plastic insert. Since you are running with an Alpha drive the dog clutch in the Alpha drive DOES NOT LIKE solid hub props. Unless you plan to shut the motor off before you shift the lower unit won't last long. Another benefit with the plastic hub is it may let go before the Out-drive will. The Alpha is rated at 300 hp while the plastic hub is rated at 400 hp. A $14 plastic insert is a lot cheaper than rebuilding or replacing an Alpha SS drive.

Run the plastic insert, if you find that it is failing frequently then go to the steel insert. What do you have to loose?

Is the plastic hub also known as the flo torque?

650hp through a alpha? For how long? Those Spinelli's were originally custom built for the specific application. I would test the mirage first as there is a good possiblity that the boat won't plane off with it.

The entire Mercury interchangeable hub system is the "Flo-Torque II". The different inserts are known as the "plastic", "solid (stainless steel), and Mercury Racing (large shaft XR/XZ drive). All of which fit into props that are made to accept the Flo-Torque II system.

The solid and plastic are interchangeable with the supporting hardware, thrust washer, aft adapter and locking tab washer.

The XR/XZ hub kit is completely different and does not use a thrust washer or aft adapter. It has a set of three washers that fit on the aft end of the prop in front of the nut. There is no locking tab washer with the XR/XZ kit.

The Mercury plastic insert part # is 835290A1. These should be readily available almost anywhere.

Cord, Wette Vette and his father have run 500hp through the Alpha SS for several years on this boat without an issue. This is on an '88 Sunsport 196. I'm sure the small size and weight is a big factor. The nitrous was only run in short 10-30 second bursts.

Throttleup, so if the plastic hub goes first, do I lose the prop? I realize this is better than breaking a drive, but it would still suck.

No you don't loose the prop. The plastic just breaks and you will have to replace it. Be sure to use a rev limiter.

It can be replaced while your on the water as long as you have the spare plastic insert. Sure beats paddling back.

I ran a plastic insert on a 500+Hp motor for several days without a failure, but I went solid after that.

zt260, thanks for the info. I think I'll go with the plastic and carry a spare. BTW, it does have a rev limiter.
