I am have a 454 taken out of my Baja and replaced with a 496- complete. How many shop hours should this take???? I don't want to get $#!!#$ from the marina mechanic for charging me too much...which he has a history of doing at times to people. I am thinking about 5 hours.

Engine only should take 1 - 2 hours max. They do it at Lake X in about 45 mins.

5-6 Hours???
If it takes an expert that long, he is dogging it big time.
I have pulled engines out of my boat in 45min. Back in, drive on, and running in 90min.
I think most marinas charge a flat $500 though. I guess that is 5-6 Hours...

The shops here usually charge 100.00 per cylinder so about 800 to remove and replace. shop should do it in about 3-5 hrs depending on conditions. go ahead and take your sundeck off when you take it to them. That will save some time and the risk of them damaging it as well.

They are not replacing an engine with the same type engine.
There will be some fit up to do.
Is the exhaust the same?
What about all the different wiring and plumbing? Throttle controls etc.

I just did a 454 to 8.1HO(s) in my 32 baja and had it out yesterday for the first time (gota love that fuel injection), any way if you can do most of the easy stuff youre self, like remove the exhaust piping, drives engine hatch and wiring that will save you some $ per hr. charges .my boat is an 86 and the main barrel conector (bat +, -,start,oil psi ect.was the same, but the new 496s have a lot of other conectors for drive oil level, tranny temp, ect that should just plug right in. engine mounts were in the same place and so was exhaust. but you chould have the tool or have the shop align. the motors

Are you sure the exhaust lines up at the back, I bought a boat that had 496's in it and put my 500hp's in and the motor mounts did not line up neither did the exhaust. Just letting you know what you might find. good luck.

As soon as anything changes the problems seem to start. They usually arn't big problems but if you owned the shop and needed to get shop rate for the dicken around it can soon appear that you are over charging when you are just asking for shop rate.I had my last motor out and torn down to bare block in 4 hours. It was still warm.I think it is because I'm getting to much practice.I tell my friends I save money on winterising because I always seem to have to pull the motor for some reason.Besides if I didn't how could I justify all the beer drinking in the garage over the winter months.
