Here is my two cents. A big vehicle can do big and little things but a little vehicle can't do big things. I am a boater and a farmer and I have seen it all. Yeah that vehicle can pull more than it is rated for short runs, but what about the quick stops, overloaded rear tires, overheated transmission, and overworked gas guzzler under the hood. When that vehicle reaches 60,000 miles or so i would be finding it a new home. I have a 33 baja outlaw and a F250 super duty crew cab with the powerstroke. Half tank of fuel in truck and 60 gallons of fuel in the boat on a triple axle heritage i was shocked to see 19750 lbs gross weight on the local scales, thats not counting the four in my family and all the gear we take along. I travel to Lake Ozarks through Jefferson City and the speed limit is 70. I put the cruise on 73 leave it in overdrive and relax. Can't complain about the 13-14 mpg either.

want to save 30k. buy a early 80's dually with 454 for dirt cheap. get a new 502 ($5500) ho tow motor and 4L80e trans. the trans is rated for 24000lb. or beef up the turbo 400 that came in the dually. let your local chevy dealer put it in and you'll still be at around 10K or less if you keep the original trans. good luck on a tough decision. I pull my 34 Vyper (8500 #'s) with triple axle trailer with a 99 Expedition. Most of the towing is short distance, beginning and end of season. Did tow for about 5 hours when I first bought. Kept a nice steady speed of @ 60mph. Just burned a whole tank of gas getting her home (30 gals).

For long distance, I'd go with a diesel.

Vyper, double check your figures. My 01 34 weighs 7500#, add the steel triple axle, fuel, boat stuff, etc, and your hovering right under 10,000#. Sold my 98 expy, when I got the new boat.

Been in double cab chevs' for yrs both gas and desiel..... pulliing diff whieghts form boats to various other things..... cannot go wrong with them for sure, although if you are seeking some extra creature comforts..... being an X suburban owner and i emphisize
----X---- which is what i turned to when my better half and i decided for a little more inside room. I strongly suggest the Excursion.... granted we no longer are pulling such loads as you but even with our previous boat and trl. we were pulling 7500lbs there was a tremendous diff between the Sub. and the Ex off the top of my head i tthink it is rated at 10,000lbs don't quote me on that one.... anyhow... good luck ps,,,, am a gm guy too...
