Crank Question?
Which would be the better way to build a budgeted 540.
Options are :
1. Buy freshly ground calies .010 mains, rods std.
or
2. Buy eagle or Scat as advertised on ebay (Std
rods Std mains) Both 4.25 stroke
No - new calies is not in the budget

Provided the Callies was turned by a competent crank grinder and the journal fillets have the proper radius, it would be my first choice.

RMB is right on. With that said though I am running a eagle with no problems to date. 3yrd year well over 200hrs. Either way make sure you have the crank and rods checked by a competent machine shop you can trust and has a good rep. Make sure to double check bearing radius clearance on eagle cranks. Just my .02

I'd buy the used Callies... but I'd also magnaflux them if you are blowing the engine.... You should be able to find someone that does magnafluxing if you call an airplane engine rebuilder or mechanic... all aircraft engine cranks and rods have to be magnafluxed during rebuild. It's cheap insurance.... all the rotating assembly can be checked for under 100.00...
