Question 502 mpi/bravo xr OR 496ho with bravo x?

Here is a question or actually a poll for you folks. Say for example you were to purchase a new single engine V-boat i.e. Superboat 30y2k or Pantera 28 and planned to eventually supercharge whatever motor you were to get with it, and initially only had enough money for either the 496HO with standard bravo drive, or a slightly used (Less than 15 hours) 502mpi and a new bravo XR which would you take?

502, you have far more choices in cylinder heads and induction systems for the older GM Big Block series. Aftermarket parts are and will be much cheaper for years to come.

Default 502vs496

502- forged internals
496 Cast internals

Buy the 502 add iconel valves, new head gaskets, external steering, and whipple.

The stock 496 is not the best engine to try and supercharge. The stock compression is higher than the 502, which would mean less boost available to run, and the stock pistons are probably the weak link for this application. Now if you are willing to modify the 496 and change out the weak links, it may turn out to be the best choice. There are several aftermarket parts now or soon to be available that may make this engine the better of the two. Time will tell.
