Sounds like the one I had to do, it was 24 years old. (79 wellcraft).
I was able to soak the heads with a little WD40 and it soften the gunk, exposing decent screw heads. But my screw heads were hex, not phillips, and I think that helped immensly.
I was able to use the vice grip trick on a screw for a battery tray over the weekend.
You know how corroded that puppy was. All rust and the head was useless.
WD 40, patience, and vice grips finally did the trick with no drilling.
I like the fresh vice grips idea.
I'm not a fan of the drill/water idea, hope you don't have to resort to drilling.
