Merc 454, BW Tranny, TRS outdrive
Hi,
My new project boat has no pressure in the tranny... can I pull the engine separating the trans at the bellhousing? Leaving the trans/trs intact. If it's just pump indexing it might make for a quick fix (?)
Thanks!

Well, it wasn't all that easy to get it out! But the good news (for me) is the previous owner had the pump indexed incorrectly! poor guy... gave up on a four year project because of it!
One thing he was especially proud of is those motor mounts! Getting the first engine out was a complete and royal pain! He had 4 bolts in each side... and everyone of them the bolt would spin with the nut. It was hard enough getting to the nuts, much less both. Anyone else using these type of mounts? Is there a better way?
Another potential problem I noticed... When I unbolted the tranny it separated from the bellhousing about 1mm. Makes me think alignment isn't perfect... even worse, there is no alignment using those mounts. What if I need a small fraction adustment???
Thanks again!

I also have the 454/BW/TRS with racing mounts and would like to ask. If the tranny is still in the boat, do you have a jack holding up the front or is is hanging from the tailstock as I do not have a support under the tranny to the stringer.

Good question... can the tailstock hold the tranny?
What I did was use a ratchet strap, routed it undernieth the tranny, then up and around the rail on the back of the boat. It's holding pretty good.

When I pull the engines I just take the tranny's too, only two more bolts on the tranny mounts near transom and it come out with the engine....you will have to pull the outdrive however to re-install....Fred

With the old MerCtrans II the tailstock WAS the rear mount; The motor mount supports on the inner transom assmb. were not used. So I would say "yes", the tailstock will hold the tranny. --- Jer

My 1976 Cig Awesome has the same setup, have had each engine out twice now.The trans hangs off the back mounts, when you put the engines back in I put a cable come-along from the arm on the engine hoist to the top of the trans to pick it back up for alignment. Then use a couple of long bolts for guide studs to slide it all back together.
