XR/Imco won't shift after getting towed
I need some help guys on where to start fixing this. Here's the story.
I was called into work on Saturday and the wife and kids just stayed out on the boat. As it turns out she didn't shut off the motor fast enough when pulling on to the beach, and sucked up sand. She then started to drive it and it started to overheat so she shut it off and a buddy towed the boat in. We flushed out all the hoses, engine and outdrive on Sunday morning and went to unload the boat and it will not shift into forward or reverse gear. The cables appear to be moving and I will remove the helm cable to make sure that it is operational. She told me that she put in neutral before shutting it off.
Assuming that it is good, where should I start to trouble shoot this thing. Pull the back cover off to check the detent assembly?
Thanks, I want to start in on it tonight so ideas you can give me is very welcome.

I just helped a buddy of mine replace the lower shift cable on his Bravo 3 after his impeller went bad and his engine temp alarm went off. His cable had melted, bound up and would not shift the drive. It doesn't have to run without water for very long before things start to melt. When you remove your drive to replace the cable, you may find other rubber pieces at the transom melted. Total cost of parts for his repair was about $400. Good luck.

Before Taking Back Cover Off I Would Disconnect Shifter In Engine Compartment Idle Motor On Garden Hose, and See If You Can Shift It By Using The Shift Cable From Drive.( By Hand ) If Prop Wasn't Turning In Gear Nothing Should Of Happened To Drive. If It Was In Drive When She Hit It May Of Broke Coupler,or A Vert Shaft Or Drive Shaft. You Will Be Able To Fell The Drive Go Into Gear By Hand Both Forward Or Reverse. Motor Need To Be Turning To Shift Properly. Tell Your Wife Timing Is Everything

I am heading out to look at it. I will Look at the cable and test the controls and then try to shift it with the cable. Thanks for the replies. I will let you know what I find.
Anyone else have ideas?
