Need Generator

A buddy of mine has just bought a new four winns 265 ? cruiser, and wants to add a generator to the boat, the dealer says its about a 10K dollars to add this on a new boat.. Anyone have any experience adding a generator, where can a new one be bought and what price should the parts cost... we will install, if we can. what size do you guys think also... i'm thinking 1500-2000 watts would work.. just need to run the air and maybe microwave or stove top sometimes....

Thanks
Don

Re: Need Generator

Don, My Super Hawaii came with a 4000 watt and had a refrig and AC to run. The dealer had mine out of the boat when I bought it 2 years ago, because of a water leak in the oil cooler. He said it works fine, but was getting water in the oil. They had replaced the headgasket, but it didn't fix the problem. I've never reinstalled it. I've been thinking about converting it to a generator for regular use. but may be to big of a hassle. I might consider selling it for a whole lot less than 10k. It's a Kohler. If remeber correctly it has 300 hours.

Re: Need Generator

A 4Kw marine genset should run between $3,800 and $5,000 new in a crate.

2Kw will run A/C and fridge, but not much else.
The stovetop alone will take 2Kw.

The "econo" genset crowd loves the Honda Eu2000i. Small and quiet. $900. Just sit it on the swim platform or on the bow (depending on the wind direction). Can't coop it up in an enclosed compartment. (Too much heat and not explosion proof).

Re: Need Generator

And, the genset on the platform trick is a bit difficult to ground properly..

10K is outrageous. Check out Northern lights or Kohler at a dealer near you . Get the electrical requirements off of your A/C and the range, add a bit to those for comfort. You dont want the genset too close to your max requirements or it will be running under a full load all the time. Get the next step up, it will live longer..

Re: Need Generator

Be careful if you put a genset on the platform. As far as I know they aren't marine certified. If you have any probs (i.e., fire, people burns, etc.) your insurance probably won't cover you.
