Default Depth gauge is not reading correctly

The depth gauge on my 38 lightning is turning on, but it only reads 1.9 to 2.2 feet regardless of the true depth. It is mounted to under the step going to the cabin on the port side of center. It looks like there is not anything but fiberglass hull. Any advise is appreciated.
