Merc 525 Power Steering Bottle Leaks
A friend of mine has a 2004 boat with Merc 525's and has had a problem with leaking power steering bottles and asked me to post for him seeking a fix. Apparently he has been told Merc has went back to an old design bottle to temporarally fix? Are other folks having this problem with Merc bottles? Any info greatly appreciated!

Re: Merc 525 Power Steering Bottle Leaks
I had the same problem. See if he has ITS system. Mine was installed improperly. Merc has a service bulletin out on how to install the hydraulic hoses and bleeding of the system. I was unable to bleed the air out of the system making the bottles leak all over...it even took out my starteer. All is better now and I haven't had anymore problems.

The problem isn't with the ITS, it's the setup with the original style reservoir on the 525efi. If you have any other style steering along with the problem reservoir you will have problems purging the air from the system. You can get the original reservoir to work with the proper procedures, but Merc came out with a retrofit kit to lessen the problems. The original reservoir also has problems being used with multiple pumps. Give Merc Racing service a call and they should be able to help.
