Default 502MPI with low oil pressure

I've got a friend with a 29' Fountain powered by a 1997 502MPI.
The engine has around 500hours. It still runs great but the oil pressure has been steadily dropping throughout the summer.
Now after running hard, above 3500rpm, and slowing down to around 1000rpm, the oil pressure drops out of sight, with alarms ringing.
Then it slowly builds back up.
He has changed the oil (SAE40) and it did not help.
I am thinking, there are some bad bearings, and she's going to lock up soon.
Could it be as simple as a new oil pump? or
Is it time for a new engine?
