I don't know if this applies, but my 496 with 3-4 hrs died with a cranksensor failure. Then coolant started entering the crankcase with about 75 hrs.The rockers and lifters were replaced.I had it at the dealer 3 times after that and they finnally replaced the long block. GM said something about the rods, and porus castings on early blocks. check into it with your dealer. Mine was in a 2500hd but same block

Ok Roadrunner, decision made......the little sonic twin will stay just that "the little sonic twin" although not as pretty as you, who say's little can't be faster? Soooo here we go and go I do mean, 525's on order. Will this get us the FTD award now???? Oh one more thing how about that foliage ride, or did I just shoot myself in the foot? Something the Coyote would do!

There are several Merc service bulletins and fix campaigns in effect for certain serial number 496 HO's. The exhaust manifold cooling check balls are a problem in salt water if you do not flush.

I Can't wait to see what surprises you will have instore for us come spring, I can't imagine you letting things just sit all winter. We did notice that you wasted no time in making sure that new truck was not going to be in that FTD catagory. Now that that is out of our system lets talk snowmobiles, What the heck are you going to do with that???????????

I would like to know what actually let go in your 496 when the dealer tears it down. We've seen some problems with some 496's over the last 3 years, but the percentages are pretty small and most failed or let go earlier than 68 hours. The internals are not as strong as the blueprinted 525EFI's but they also don't cost 15K more. You might consider some of our parts for your 496.You'll be better than 525HP and probably save some money. I have heard from several builders that 525HP's are still on B/O and the wait time is supposedly about 4- 6 months min. I am sure Merc will treat you right on warranty. Good luck in the future no matter what you decide to do.
