Default Why did my 496HO blow @4400 RPM

Has this happened to you or anyone you know? We were running the lake at about 70MPH, 4400RPM when the starboard motor made some pretty bad noises and stopped instantly. This is a 2004 Sonic 31ss with T-496 HO's in it. The boat has 68 hours on it, The oil is checked everytime we go out, and was changed at 50hrs with Merc oil and filters. We usually run the boat at around 50mph with a few faster runs thrown in. The smartcraft reading said "cam and crank shaft sensor" which leads me to think timing chain.

The good news is We are still under warranty and it is the end of the season, except for a few foliage runs that will be missed. Now I must weigh my options, do I just replace the 496 and call it good or do I trade them in for 500's or 525's. Looking for "more Good Advice"

My guess is chain or the cam broke. Have them warranty it, and see what you think next season.

What kind of oil & filters did you use? Just a thought outside the box.

Crank sensor. Early 496HO's had a problem with these causing the motor to shut down in safe mode. Check it out. Also, rods were recalled due to mishape on the ends. Could cause the engine to mushroom as well. Look in to it.

Ah Yes, Roadrunner, but thus the boat spends the winter in Alex Bay and comes back, FTD or maybe even looking like yours, Then what??? I guess now you know Wile E Cayote is a genius.

50 hours before an oil change? That sounds a bit high. Mine get done every 25.

However, 525EFIs = kick-ass!! If you have the op to go them; by all means. I am jealous. I have 496HOs and would give a left nut for 525s.
