Default Correct Oil Filter P/N

Sorry for another filter question but...

Does anybody know the difference between Merc 802885T and 802885Q oil filters? Application is 1996 Formula with twin 5.7LX / Bravo III 's. Owners manual says 14957, but this was replaced by the "Q". However the "T" also says it is for all V8s w/remote oil filter, which is what I have. Is the "T" just a later revision?

I want to use the best (within reason) filter available. Any suggestions for other brands that will fit my engine. I have seen alot of other posts for Big Block applications, but what do you guys recommend for a stock Small Block?

Thanks,

Bob

I think one is taller and the other shorter. Taller filters do not always filter or flow better and spring tensions can be different and thus not interchangeable. The Champion Aircraft company makes the Mobil-1 filters. I don't think there is a better one out there. The A/C is the best "cheap filter" at about $5.00 and the Mobil-1 is about $10.00

Thanks Hydro! I am leaning towards the Mobil 1 M1-302. Is this the short one? I have read the posts re: Mobile One oil and many seem to agree with you that this is the best filter for the money. Is it OK to use with regular oil? I'm not yet sure if I'm ready to switch to synthetic as I'm worried about oil leaks starting. Have about 180 hrs on one engine - the other has 30 hrs.

I bought the boat in July - previous owner replaced engine with a Merc reman after piston failed. Dealer had all the records. Boat is in great condition, but who knows how well the previous owner took care of it. I mean, an engine failure after 150 hrs? Dealer stated that engine previously overheated and dealer did a valve job at 130 hrs. Piston failed 20 hrs later.

The "T" filter is the black Merc filter, the one ending in "Q" is the "Quicksilver" label. I don't see the Quicksilvers around much.

Here's the Q:
