Default 502 MPI - Redline on the Volts Gauge... Help.?

So the situation is something like this...
Engine is running fine.... then all of a sudden
Volts gauge just Burries it self to the far right side... (+)
I shut down the motor. start it up again and like magic the
problem is fixed.... the motor has begun to cough/sputter
once or twice after I kill the ignition.. but upon start up
everything is okay again..
Am i right in thinking voltage regulator is shot??
= too much fuel?
and if this is the case does this simply mean a new alternator?
Any thoughts on this is much appreciated.. Just thought id check
in with y'all before i start ripping stuff apart.... thanks again! MW

IMO you are correct about the voltage reg. I had one do that about 4 years ago, replaced the alt (it was very old too) and everything AOK.

Symptoms like that could also include bad diode as well as bad regulator. Just go ahead and swap out the alternator.
