crate motor options

i'm looking for either a 502 or 496 - -i'd like to be at about 500hp. (wich would be the better choice?)

anyone have a good lead? i want a motor that will last a long time -- and come with some sort of a warranty.

Re: crate motor options

There has been a lot of discussion about www.1800runsnew.com crate engines. Some good, some bad experiences. Some people are running the zz502.

I am in the market for a motor right now too. So, I would like to hear some comments. Right now I am leaning towards a new 496HO. It costs more per HP than a lot of the crate motors you see but there is a price for reliability and warranty. A lot of the crate engines I see do not have a warranty, or if they do there is a ton of fine print.

Re: crate motor options

I'd contact Laz Mesa and check into his mb500.
I bet its as much or less than a 496HO.

Re: crate motor options

be careful of so called warranties, they look for any reason not to warranty motors. they give you excuses like your running lean, detonation (timing). Like most of you know I've had the year from hell with new motors.

Re: crate motor options

Definitely contact Laz Mesa at Mesa Balancing. He built the motors for my Outerlimits and it seems he put as much care into building my motors as if he were building for his own boat. Mesa is not a high volume sweat shop type engine rebuilder. He is a perfectionist that puts care into each motor and has the experience to put out a motor that is built to last. His website is www.mesabalancing.com and has his contact info there.

Once you visit Mesa in Miami and meet Laz, you wont need to shop around for options. It will be obvious that you found a good shop. He will bend over backward to build exactly what is best for your needs and can be trusted to do it like he promises.

Feel free to call me directly at 813-227-9779 if you have questions or need advice.

Re: crate motor options

If you want an inexpensive swap go with 1800runsnew. I am very happy with mine. If you are willing to spend some extra money go with a custom builder.
