Default CMI Problem Help!

I have just discovered a leak on one of my CMIs.. The leak is located on the top of the riser where it connects to the tail pipe? The connection has unique looking clamp with two nuts on it . (rusted together because of the leak.) The pipes have about 160 hours on them with the first half of that in fresh water. It does not leak at idle, only at high rpms..

Is this an easy fix?? What di I need to do?

Should I fix it right away or can I still run it wait a month and fix it when I recoup some cash.

I have just dumped a ****load of money into this boat and now this

THANKS FOR THE HELP

I would send it back to C.M.I. to have them repair it. Call and talk to Randy. Are you sure you are not reverting water up from the tailpipe? I would NOT take a chance on destroying a motor ... it can get very expensive very fast!

The engine is a 2000 HP500 EFI. The CMIs the original stock exhaust. It is just the one side, the other side looks new. The only corrosion I can see is on the clamp assembly...

As far as water reversion.. Wouldn't that be a low rpm problem? Also I thought Mercury had solved this problem with this years 500EFI and CMI combo?

I would agree it would be primarily at idle. Just trying to consider all possibilities. Can you pull the header and have it pressure tested?

What is the configuration of the tailpipes (silent choice, wet, dry, etc.)?

What kind of boat is this in?

Can you post a pic showing the problem area?

Am I reading this different. Between the header & the tailpipe there is a gasket that goes there. I know when my gasket let loose I had a dripping from there. Also only at RPM. The solution is call CMI & order some new tailpipe gaskets & install 2 at that location. Since you are saying the clamp is rusted up you might need a new one to get it all back together. By the way CMI is very proud of these gaskets.

Here is a link to their site. I also copied their list of distributers. I ordered my gaskets from Teague.

You need to find out if the header is actually cracked at the collector. This is where they will crack. It sounds like you just have water reverting back and dripping out at the flex flare collar. This is not uncommon from what I see. A lot of boat manufacturers try to save a little money when they have tails made and only have one bend put in the tail piece. Then from there at the rubber boot joint at the exhaust tip they force on the rubber. Then with time and vibration the rubber is pulling down on the exhaust tail and it makes the header and tail not match up very well then you get a leak. If the header is not cracked the water is from how it exits the tail and hits the rubber boot at the tip. Also if you have exhaust flappers they will keep the water from fully exiting and it will come back and leak out the header-tail connection. A quick way to check your header is run the water hose from the header that goes to the tail overboard and bypass the tailpiece. If you do this at an idle for a short period you will know immediatly if the header is cracked. Or just call PowerboatNW 253-627-4600. (Cameron) We have done just about every CMI configuration.

THANKS! For all the info!

I think I am going to order a new gasket and clamp assembly for that side.. Has anyone installed one of these? Or had problems with this installation?

I would like to do this myself to save a few bucks!!
