Marinizing GM DuraMax Diesel

Has anyone marinized a GM DuraMax diesel? Seems like i't very do-able for much les than buying a Yanmar or Volvo. Wouldn't the BB exhaust manifolds be straight bolt-ons?

Ive wondered the same thing,ive had 2 duramax trucks ans i think the motor would be great in a boat

Take a look at Marine Diesle. It's made by AM General, the company that makes the Hummer. They have three models, from about 250 hp to 400. They are direct replacements for Big Block gas motors. Surprisingly, the exhaust note is not that different from a gas motor.

The biggest problem would be the exhaust side. It has to be thermally protected. Most of the time they'll water jacket the exhaust, but I've seen some systems that are wrapped. As to BBC manifolds fitting, I'm sure that it would not work. The Duramax is a totally different engine.

marine diesels forte is hoping up the 6.5 litre gm for marine use,not the duramax. The real question is what could be used for exhaust with this izuzu duramax,the rest of the marinizing would be straight forward but i've never heard of bc exhaust bolting on a duramax. If someone was looking for a niche in the marine market they would buy some service replacement duramax engines,have a effiecient water cooled cast manifold made,marinize them and market them. A guy with some good milling/machining equipment could figure out a way to build a adapter to bolt on a existing manifold even!

Aa friend of mine was looking into doing this very thing. He was talking to Lightning about making the exhaust system for him. I believe they would do it.

I'm not very technical--obviously--I thought the Duramax was a derivative of a big block. Still seems like some GM light truck diesel could be marinized easily and at a lot more moderate cost than they are getting fof the Mrecruiser and Yanmars of the world.

DMax is based on nothing.

GM 6.2/6.5 Diesel was NOT derived from any gasoline engine.
It was a ground-up diesel design, as lessons learned from the hideous SMALLBLOCK-derived 5.7 Diesel proved to be damaging to GM's reputation for a number of years. While it (the 6.5) was a diesel design, it was not particularly spectacular in any one category other than to say that it is a good dependable unit that is far better tha it is given credit for - it was never a monster powerhouse, though.

There are already marine exhaust manifolds available for the 6.2/6.5 from at least two sources.

I have sniffed rumors of a newly developed LLY Duramax Marine-Spec unit.
I'm not a member of the pay site of "the Diesel Page" so I can't view it.
