Question imco steering?

I have just installed billet tabs on a 27' warlock v worldclass.I have imco dual ram power steering,But now the transom side of the ram will have to move up to clear the tabs.what I need to know is if the difference in hight will affect the steering when the drive is up or down.it looks like the ram will have to shrink in about 1 3/4".will that be ok?will I have to get shorter rams or what? thanks .

steering rams are usually mounted pretty close to the pivot axis of the drive.
You can get away with moving them a little bit, but they should BOTH be raised/lowered/spaced out together, else you risk the drive steering itself when you trim.

What are the possible side effects to moving your rams? You will lose some steering lock at the extremes of travel most likely.

I was wondering if the rams were higher if it would put the steering in a "bind"when the drive was raised,or if the pressure would be bled off somewhere, thanks

Of course it will put it in a "bind". Your steering helm is a positive displacement pump. BUT, it will force-bleed fluid back into the reservior as the rams are forced to compress.

On the axis is best. Slightly off the axis is acceptable. The farther off axis you go, the more trouble you get in.

Talk to IMCO NV. about shorting your rams. You might have a local machine shop do it. You need to keep them as close to axis as possible.

If you run dual rams the system will definitely bind. I've seen 1/2" stainless brackets bent up like a pretzel from binding. With dual rams the brackets must be precisely centered. With a single ram system, it's not quite as critical. As you trim up, the drive will be forced to turn slightly. It won't be much and you probably won't even notice it. Of course, you (or a future owner) will never be able to upgrade to a dual ram system in the future.
