Vortec Heads
I have a 1996 242 checkmate convincer with a 7.4 (454). My moter is not a vortec I belive its the 91-95 version and it has a carburator.
Im thinking about buying some used vortec heads that are about 100cc. Im told they are off a 2000 model 454. They are complete oval port vortec heads and have 140 hours on them.
The guy wants $300 for these. Would these be the right heads to buy for better performance? I intend to replace the cam and intake and possibly the carb, but not sure what to get.
Any advice would be helpfull - thanks Mike

Re: Vortec Heads
Mike
That is exactly what I did. I have a 95 454 (GEN V) with a carb. It came with the peanut port heads and cast iron intake that had ports LARGER than the heads. By changing JUST the heads and intake (Vortec L29 heads and Holley round port, dual plane intake) I picked up 10 mph! No cam change.
I suggest you purchase Dennis Moore's book "Marine Big Block Chevy engines" ( or something to that effect) and read it cover to cover. He has great information in it.
That book gave me tons of info to modify my engine INTELLIGENTLY and I feel I made the right choices because of it.
If you want more info, feel free to email me at [email protected]
Good luck
