I was wondering on when a boat is air brushed do they usually clear coat just where it is air brushed or is the whole area of the air brushed area clear coated to a seam in the boat etc.
I was wondering for repair reasons.

you can do spot clearcoat. There is a flashing agent that you spray on the transition line between new clear and old clear that "flash melts" the clear into each other.

I also have covered many with 3M paint protection film, I have protected many murals on bikes and cars, even fire trucks. its 99.9% clear and 100% UV compatible.

Call any automotive body shop supply store. Dupont makes it as well as PPG
and Sikkens it is a Clear Coat Blender. It allows the new clear to melt and flow into the original. It is helpful to know what is the original finish on the boat. Personally
I would try to find areas to hard mask. If not the above will work.

All air brushing has to be protected. Most time it is only laquer clear,its easier to deal with. Top notch jobs will use urethane clear to an edge, this will eliminate any problems in the blending process. ALL jobs that are blended will soon or later show. Its the nature of the beast

So is the clear coat just sprayed on up to the outline that is airbrushed or is it sprayed over the painted area and onto the unpainted?
Also pro's and con's with air brushing compared to decals.

my entire boat was repainted with black 2 part urethane, and airbrushed, then two coats of clear in 1998. it is still holding up quite well and i don't wax it at all. just hose it off unless seagulls get it. i've touched it up several times. sand down through the clear, re-do the base, air brush, and use regular clear over the repair, the edges where the repair meets the old gets cleared with blender clear. there is polishing and wet sanding involved too. you need to be a bit artistic to blend the areas correctly. it's not easy.
if you only clear over one spot that has been air brushed, it will not look right. it will be very shiny, thus, the whole area should be cleared such as the transom.
my opinion is, air art is favorable over vinyl. it's not as as to repair though.
