Wording is a bit odd. Is P1 a new manufacturer or is it a P1 model from an existing manufacturer? We'll know after the show opens of course but curious who it is.

Looks like I'm just a little behind the times. Was already shown at the PRI show. Glad to see the US so actively involved.

The boat is actually for the US and other markets before the UK - we'll be getting the new boat to replace the Cougar hull that they are using at the moment - of course this means that after buying new motors last year when they changed from Honda to Mercury, they are introducing a new hull for 2012 at even more expense?

Surely anything taking the sport in a new direction and attracting attention is a good thing? The old hulls will still be able to race in the 2011 season

P1 SETS THE PACE WITH NEW RACE BOAT LAUNCH

Powerboat P1 Management has today announced the launch of a new race boat that is set to revolutionise the sport of mono-hull powerboat racing.

The new P1-28SS boat has been in development for the past eight months and features the latest technology in safety, hull design, digital telemetry and data acquisition. The boat will debut in SuperStock National Championships in the UK, USA and Norway in 2011 as part of a far-reaching overhaul of Powerboat P1's sporting and commercial activities.

Powerboat P1 chairman, Asif Rangoonwala, said: "After eight years in this sport it is clear to me that one-design class racing is the most appropriate format for creating a motorsport with a level playing field for competitors. The new boat and series will lead the move from powerboat racing being a hobby into it joining the professional motorsports arena, making it easier for spectators and TV viewers to understand. Keeping to a simple proposition is key in this sport and at the heart of this is the new boat. We have negotiations that are at an advanced stage with at least eight other National Federations which are expected to be racing the new boat by 2012."

"The new boat is the foundation for national and international racing in multiple markets - it is cost effective, safe and very exciting to drive," said an enthused Rangoonwala. "The best drivers in the various national championships will have the opportunity to race at continental level and ultimately in a world championship and it is this format which we hope will bring a much-needed level of credibility and accessibility to the sport," he added.

The initial concept design for the new boat was formulated by P1 and its design team led by Raimondo Iuretig. The concept was then digitally designed by some of the marine industry's premier engineers ahead of three prototype vessels undergoing extensive trials in the USA. "The boat's ultra-efficient hull design and engine technology afford outstanding performance capabilities at reduced horsepower, decreasing the associated cost versus speed/performance ratio. Construction materials have been carefully selected to optimise weight distribution and maximise endurance and safety; the cockpit construction is planned to incorporate Kevlar for added impact-penetration protection," said Martin Sanborn, P1's director of operations in North America, who has led the development of the new boat.

The cockpit design itself has been engineered to provide many of the elements of an enclosed cockpit in an open-cockpit configuration, ensuring maximum safety protection from water impact and collision. The head of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) Safety Commission, Bob Wartinger said: The new design is fully in line with our objectives and we are looking forward to seeing this exciting new class of racing."

The new 28ft (8.5m) mono-hull powerboat can run two alternative horsepower options, allowing teams to move up in class by simply changing the engine. The smaller horsepower class will race at speeds of around 60mph, whilst the larger class will race at around 75mph. "We felt it was important to make this option available to teams and to reduce their investment - in the past, teams wanting to move to the bigger class have had to invest in both a new boat and a new engine which meant a double hit. With the new boat, teams retain their same boat and only need to upgrade the engine package which is very appealing. This means teams can join the series knowing that their main investment in the boat is a safe bet," said Powerboat P1's chief operating officer, Robert Wicks.

"The level of interest in the new boat has been fantastic and it's a good feeling to already be taking orders. We are in the final phase of what has been an exhaustive engine tender process and will be making an announcement in early January as to the chosen partner. A high quality product, on-site race support for competitors and a commitment to joint marketing activities are some of the key criteria we have looked at when talking to the leading brands in the industry," added Wicks.

In the United Kingdom, where the SuperStock class originated, Powerboat P1 Management has confirmed the new boat will replace the existing P1 SuperStock race fleet as it nears the end of its lifespan, but not before 2012. "The series is designed to encourage a new generation of drivers and teams, but at the same time we felt it was imperative that the existing teams who have supported the series were afforded a transition period. We have agreed with the teams that they can still race their existing boats in the UK series in 2011 but in all other markets the new boat will be implemented immediately. To assist teams, we have come up with a range of cost effective options including lease deals and arrive-and-drive packages to encourage entries," said Rangoonwala.

The P1-28SS boat will make its public debut this week at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, which takes place at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida from 9th - 11th December.

The launch of the boat follows the announcement that new international rules for the P1 SuperStock Championships were fully accepted by the UIM at the governing body's recent General Assembly in Malta.

POWERBOAT P1 TAKES FIRST ORDERS FOR NEW SUPERSTOCK BOAT

Powerboat P1 unveiled its new P1-28SS race boat at the Performance Race Industry (PRI) show in Orlando, Florida last week, and the eagerly-awaited launch made a big impact with the motorsport industry and powerboat fans alike.

At 28ft (8.5m) long and reaching speeds of up to 80 mph, the new powerboat represents great value for money and was one of the most affordable forms of motorsport promoted at last week's show. With prices from just $28,000 per year for a season's lease deal, or $89,000 to buy in race spec, the P1-28SS's prices amazed visitors to the show - all of whom expected the 250+hp engine to be an additional cost!

Orders were received from new racers for the North American series to be launched next year and P1 is busy following up serious interest from show visitors from Canada, the Caribbean, Argentina and the UK.

First to place an order on the P1 stand was Jorge Arellano who will race the boat in the new series in 2011. An accomplished racer in the early 1990s, Jorge compared the SuperStock series to the "good old days when there was lots of competition in fewer racing classes." He liked the new boat's configuration, saying: "The boat is beautifully designed and has a stunning-looking cockpit and layout. I'm very impressed with the safety features that P1 has incorporated into the design and I'm looking forward to getting back into the driver's seat next year. The versatility of the boat is good too, as the rear race cowl comes off to reveal a rear bench seat for an extra three passengers!"

Martin Sanborn, Director of North American Operations for P1 USA commented, "We have been inundated with interest and leads for the new P1-28SS at the show from an audience who perhaps have not considered powerboat racing as a motorsport previously. The huge level of interest confirms what we set out to achieve with the new boat - an extremely well designed and appointed powerboat representing incredibly good value for money. We have been promoting our racing packages which provide options for team owners and racers and allows newcomers to form a syndicate to share the costs of ownership over a number of years"

The P1 SuperStock series will arrive in North America in May next year. The five or six event championship will run from May to October with races planned for the Gulf Region, West Coast, Eastern Seaboard, Florida and Great Lakes. In 2012 it is expected that the five to six race venues for 2011 will become race regions, with each region having its own five to six race events.

The North American SuperStock champions will go forward to race against SuperStock champions in Europe, Asia and the Middle East from 2013.

The P1-28SS boat leaves the USA this week to travel to the UK for its European debut in front of 90,000 visitors at Autosport International at the NEC in Birmingham from 13-16th January 2011.

And then? I agree it will be fantastic if in brings in new racers to the US scene, but in the UK it will disenchant existing racers in the series few of whom can afford to throw away a race boat to invest that much money into the new hull and engine - the 300XS appears to be changing to the 250XS so they can't even use their existing motor that's only 1 season old!

I wish the series every success, but I feel it will be an uphill battle in the UK!

Is there any contact information for Martin Sanborn? Is any other teams looking to do this or any other organizations looking to host these races? Do they plan on having their own sites? Sorry about the questions but I would be very interested in the answers, Thanks
Chris
