Default Savannah ruckus & F1 points standings

Ok, the Savannah controversy appears to be over. According to the APBA-Offshore listings, it's #1 Winnebago, #2 Typhoon, #3 Screamin' Eagle.

Gino & Mark had been in the lead for most of the race. In the final laps, Randy & Glenn gained the lead (according to an APBA press release, they "stole" it) in a daring maneuver.

Within 200 feet of the finish line, the HP 525 of the new Kryptonite went into a trouble condition (overheat) and shut down. Nevertheless, Randy & Glenn finished second.

Back in the pits, both Gino and Mark complained loudly about unsafe operation on Typhoon's part. APBA VP Jim Poplin callled a meeting. After the meeting, the results were published with #2 conspicuously open.

This comes in addition to a DQ during the speed trials the day before. Typhoon was the fastest boat with a 82.9 average, but they were disqualified for running outside of the channel. It did cost the New Jersey Boyz 13 precious points.

According to Peconic's very unofficial points calculator, the standings in the APBA F1 circuit are now as follows:

Rank Total

1 300 F1-10 Winnebago, Activator
2 249 F1-29 Typhoon, Kryptonite
3 241 F1-83 Screamin' Eagle, Warlock
4 212 F1-68 World Player Casino, Superboat
5 183 F1-52 Offshore Addiction, Warlock
6 155 F1-90 H2O, Warlock
7 163 F1-56 Velocity VR1, Velocity
8 86 F1-1 Activator, Activator
9 77 F1-30 Superboat, Superboat
10 69 F1-48 Flashwave, Warlock

The season shapes up into a tight race between the three powerhouses of the Factory 1 class, Activator, Kryptonite and Warlock.

Randy's brand new black Kryptonite is the fastest boat in its class. As the Kilo runs did show, Gino's Activator is about a mile slower. The screams of the rev limiter let everybody know that the Black Beauty could even gain a mile or two with some tweaking.

Randy & Glenn need to get a handle on the technical gremlins. And Mercury Racing needs to take a serious look at that closed cooling system. It's not conducive to winning if the engine computer is afraid of the heat and shuts down in spitting distance to the finish line.

A & A in their Screamin' Eagle Warlock could upset the battle between Mr. Clean and Bad Dog, but the Eagle drivers need to add some more MPH and hang it out a bit more. If Mr. Clean or Bad Dog develop issues with the boat or the judges, Screamin' Eagle willl be right behind them to exploit their troubles.

The new Sportsmaster drives do not seem to agree with the Superboats. Eddie Simmons clocked a very disappointing 70.697 mph during the Kilos, the Coens didn't even run after Daytona. When the Coens won the OPA race in Pt. Pleasant, they did so without the Sportsmaster.

True to its name, Velocity is a very fast boat, but faced with waves, it always slows down. Velocity won the drag race on the Savannah river, but only after Randy's Black Beauty was disqualified.

Randy appears to be under the watchful eyes of the judges. Three races, two DQs, and one very stern warning.

All in all, it's a race betwen Mr. Clean and Bad Dog. It promises to be exciting all the way to Key West.

All F1 racers have a Joker up their sleeves: The new APBA "get out of jail" rule - wipe out a bad Pro Series result with a good showing in the Divisionals. Randy & Glenn can use it to greater effect. Currently, the Jersey team could swap 48 points in Daytona for 100+ points in a Divisional. Gino could swap 84 points in Marathon for 100+ points in a Divisional. Randy has the better trade.

The soap opera is still ongoing. The APBA site now lists Randy's #2 spot as "Race Unoffical, Under review ..."

Peconic,
Great little write up. It gives a great overview of the hole weekend. As far as Randy and Glenn we don't care what happens to them. I told one offical I'm friends with them and it don't bother us if they only get a warning. But when your almost deck to deck to another boat and the other team heads to the wrong bouy and cuts across the other boats bow at close to 78 MPH in 3 to 4 footers we had two choices, run into them or turn the boat hard to port and almost ejecting Mark out of the boat.....we chose to turn...sounds dum to have almost injure one of your teammates for someone elses stupidity......if it happens again with them I personally don't think I will turn the boat next time....It is what it is. AND WHEN SOMEONE DOSE SOMETHING STUPID LIKE THAT YOUR GONNA GET HURT AND THEY CAN DEAL WITH THE RESULTS. And to top it off wright after the race we pulled our boat up to thiers and ask what was up with that move, Glenn says we where trying to pull of the course......yeah! at 80mph.. OK....not hey are you guys all right. Somethimes getting hit by a 5000lbs boat at 80mph will give you a wake up call. You make the call.

Interesting, Gino. Great to hear your side. BTW, according to the APBA press release, what you described happened "when a buoy marking the second turn came loose from its anchor. Marrone, not knowing where the turn was, drove straight toward nearby spectator boats." That wouldn't be the only thing that's wrong with that press statement.

BTW, latest episode in the soap opera: Apparently, the exchange of words after the race became very heated. Add to that the 100+ degree temperature, and Randy decided he had to cool off. So off came the jacket and into the water he jumped. That didn't sit too well with the judges either, because everybody was still in their boats and the race was not considered over.

Peconic,

We kept a 250 to 300 yard lead on Typhoon the whole race, the number 2 bouy was gone when we came out of turn one we slowed down when we passed where it should of ben and kept on going stright looking for it, when we got to about 70 yards from the coast gaurd boat in front of the spectator fleet we turned and headed for turn 3 by that time Typhoon was about 30 to 40 yards behind us. We pulled away from them and the incident did'nt acure till the next lap.
