It would seem like the prop wash would cause the plate to vibrate. More so with the shorties. I wouldn't be surprised if they developed cracks over time from the flexing.
Peconic, your picture is interesting. Maybe, Mercury should relocate this plate above the forward cavitation plate?
My plates (standard length sportmasters) are a good two inches above the prop, and they are staying on.
I also cut an inch off either side of the plates to enhance the rooster tails. This has probably helped reduce the potential vibration issue. The only reason I used them was to hold the drive showers!

FYI, after having had some contact with the muck (no damage,) I found little rocks wedged between the forward cavitation plate and the splash plate. The rocks were right in the area where the sides of the splash plate are bent up to (supposedly) keep it from turning. If those rocks would have bent the metal down a bit more (easy,) and if my plate would not be welded on, it would spin.

Could this be the answer?
Merc has a new splash plate for Sportmaster.
The plate bolts onto the upper from the bottom with two flathead screws.
The splashplate is also fastened to the upper with two buttonhead screws.
The upper housing has to be drilled out for the buttonhead screws.
The screws allow aluminum spacers between the housing and the plate.
Anyone using these?
